The app, currently undergoing beta testing, allows users to instantly alert pre-selected family members and the nearest Mexican consulate with a single tap if they believe detention is imminent. Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs, explained, In case you find yourself in a situation where detention is imminent, you push the alert button, and that sends a signal to the nearest consulate.
This technological solution comes as part of a broader strategy to protect the estimated 11.5 million Mexican migrants in the US with some form of legal residency, as well as the 4.8 million without proper documentation.
Comprehensive Support for Mexican Nationals
Beyond the app, the Mexican government has implemented several additional measures to support its citizens abroad:
- Increased consular staff and legal aid to assist detained migrants
- A 24-hour call center to answer migrant queries and provide information
These initiatives demonstrate Mexico’s commitment to protecting its nationals in the face of potential changes to US immigration policies.
